Child in your eyes Growing up, sweet sixteen going out in a limousine All dressed up in your party dress, looks to me that your hair’s a mess You were the apple of my eye, I used to wake up to hear you cry, Now I wait and wonder why? Just don’t forget the child, don’t forget the child Don’t forget the child, In your eyes Tall dark and charming too, texting boy in love with you The world at his fingertips, just be careful of his lips You will fall in love one day, I’ll try not to stand in your way, Listen to everything you have to say When the world wants something of you, keep your light shining through When your love, cuts like a knife Baby blues in the middle of the night You can call me anytime, I’ll come running cause your mine, Keep on talking, hold the line Words and Music by Jonathan Thompson Meadow Music 2008

One Life 03:25
One Life One life, to lose, one kiss to miss One peace to break, hold me in your arms You’re there when I need a shoulder You make me young when I’m feeling older Forgive the past when times were colder Hold me in your arms When the world feels so much smaller Secrets lost and mysteries over Search me out like a supernova Hold me in your arms The more we know the more we don’t know The more we search the least we find Letting go and letting you in Is the hardest thing to do When I’m feeling this blue Words & music by Jonathan Thompson Meadow Music 2008

Pilgrims 07:00
Pilgrims When I’m feeling lost and found When I’m on this Pilgrim road Hoping for a destiny Will you then come to me To hold me, find me take me to the other side Cause I’m dreaming, wishing I was somewhere in you mind Beauty, jewel like radiant in my visual light Beyond me, I’m thinking Is this a dream or is it right, O God If I stray off this path If I slip and lose my way Show a sign that I may say Someone in my life today Can this path be so cruel So many prints are left behind Each pilgrim making their own way History tells us were all the same Words & music by Jonathan Thompson Meadow Music 2008

War Zone 03:48
War Zone It’s a war zone, can you feel it in the air? It’s a war zone, can you feel it in the air? I get troubled, by what I see By what I read, what comes through my TV It’s a war zone, can you feel it in the air? The streets are burning, for a love that cares Look behind you, can you feel it coming? Broken families and children unloving It’s a war zone, can you feel it in the air? The conflict within us, the war out there Waiting for my saviour to come Which one should I choose? A state politician or a God in heaven Something that can’t be moved, moved, or proved It’s a war zone, can you feel it in the air? This friction inside of us, is driving me to despair World government’s, boundary lines People famined, it assaults my mind It’s a War zone, can you feel it in the air? It’s a War zone, can you feel it in the air? Words and music by Jonathan Thompson Meadow Music 2008

Listen To Your Soul Tell me, tell me boldly The old story of Heaven and Hell Speak to me, rant and rave at me Fix your stare on me and give me fear Sing to me, make it real to me Sonically, in my ear Cause I just don’t know what to believe It’s like a post-modernist disease I’ll be what you want me to be Just tell me what you mean Give it to me thick or lean Just tell me what you mean Give it to me thick or lean, oh yeah I see you and I hear you You’re telling me, to vote for you You promise me, promise me everything Equality to living things and freedom shared Oh can I? Can I trust you? And do you, really care? Hear me, oh won’t you hear me? Can’t you see me, coming up for air? Rest now, oh won’t you rest now? The worlds grown weary, no need to care The wind blows, east and west knows God only knows a mystery shared Listen, to your soul Listen, to your soul Listen, to your soul Words & music by Jonathan Thompson Meadow Music 2008

Whirlwind of Lovers I went to the river to pray, to wash my life away To wash my life away, no longer wished to stay Out of the depths an angel came to me An angel came to me saying, I can set you free Above all this toil and strife, this tyranny This tyranny, come take my hand and see And when you’re feeling lonely when you’re feeling sad Come to the river to wash and pray leave what you have She took me by the hand and a myriad more behind A myriad more behind singing this life is mine A whirlwind of lovers were joining hands Were joining hands from different lands Soaring above this planet earth leaving wars behind Leaving wars behind no boundaries were defined And then I rubbed my eyes, laying by the bank Laying by the bank and wondered what I drank A flock of Starlings swept on by singing in the air Singing in the air do not despair What you see and what you get is only in your mind Only in your mind clouding the sunshine I went to the river to pray, to wash my life away To wash my life away, no longer wished to stay Words and music by Jonathan Thompson Meadow Music 2008

Sing it to Me You’re looking so nice in my sight Your eyes are shining radiant and bright Your beauty is revealing A desire for love and healing Tell me what I want, tell me what I need Tell me everything you see I don’t know who I am now I don’t know where I am going here with you We’ve been treated wrong Life’s been putting us down Trying to take us, trying to beak us Trying to make us a clown, sing it with me I need more time I need to slow down Talk some more that’s have some wine It’s not that I don’t love you It’s not that I don’t care Look at the night the stars are bright A summer breeze makes it feel right We need take it gently While he music’s playing sweetly in our ears Before you go, I want you to know You fill my life this gaping hole But do you really love me? And will you sing so sweetly? When Autumn comes and the music stops There’s little more we have in stock I’ll try not to hurt you I’ll try to make it sweet till the end Words & music by Jonathan Thompson Meadow Music 2008

Peckham to Paradise The way she looked, the way she cried and the way she sighed She was looking for something Her auburn hair, her hazel eyes and a voice inside She was looking for something Come over to my place darling What will be, will be The hour is late and waiting For a coffee and something nice From Peckham to paradise In the crowd, in the noise and the void She was looking for something Like a jewel, like a light, shining bright She was looking for something The way she moved, through the air without a care She was looking for something Without a noise, in the night no one in sight She was looking for something Music & words by Jonathan Thompson Meadow Music 2008

Across the Tyne I was wondering, I was wondering, what was on your mind? I was wondering, I was wondering, across the Tyne When you went back, when you went back did you find your heart? When you went back, when you went back across the Tyne In the fatherland, in the fatherland, was there anyone left? In the fatherland, in the fatherland, across the Tyne The people you knew have changed and have gone Memories are left a heartland of stone A part of you here, a part of you there The spirit of the moors will always be yours Times are changing, times are changing, things are moving on Times are changing, times are changing, across the Tyne Cast you chains off, cast your chains off, time to sail away Cast your chains off, cast your chains off, across the Tyne Will you come to me? Will you come to me? It’s a new world Will you come to me? Will you come to me? Across the Tyne Words & music by Jonathan Thompson Meadow Music 2008

Lottery Life 05:23
Lottery Life What ya gonna do when the money runs out? What ya gonna do when the bank gives a shout? Working all your life on the brief case train Then you find out there’s nothing to gain A mortgage and a wife and a little kid The boss says son I want your head Filling in your time sheets, drinking at the bar Seems like everyone’s made your bed It’s your life, it’s your life You’ve gotta fight for what’s right Stand up and hold your ground Before you are taken over Like the passing shadow clouds The light grows dim and feels, colder Better beware cause the money man’s about He wants your share and he doesn’t care Coming through the letter box and telephone Gotta get out before he gets you alone My head spinning around, amusement arcades Levers pulling and a clattering sound Everyone’s living a lottery life Lucky numbers and Mystic Meg Have you seen the stars shining late at night The blue of the day and the sun shining bright Funny you forget with your head in the sand The chain gang life of a working man You load sixteen tons and what do you get Another day older and a deeper in debt Peter don’t you call cause I can’t go I owe my soul to the company store Word & Music by Jonathan Thompson Meadow Music 2008 Verse 6 words by Merle Travis 1946

Make Poverty 03:50
Make Poverty Make poverty Make poverty Make poverty, history Make poverty Make poverty Make poverty, history Fifty thousand die each day Living on less than a dollar a day Owe too much to pay their way Corporation trading games Feed the rich and starve the poor Make the rules to claim back more Infant mortality And social disability Crying out for humanity Children dying Mothers crying Fathers despairing Words & Music by Jonathan Thompson Meadow Music 2008

about

Songs of Rapture is quite a surprise compared to Jonathan Thompson’s live sound. Jonathan can easily rely on just his acoustic guitar playing to hold a whole room, but hearing the songs with a full five-piece band brought something different to the material.

The protest tune, War Zone, is turned into a rockier, angrier number and, with Jonathan playing both lead and rhythm guitar on this album, shows off his soloing skills. With some neat arrangements, Jonathan allows space and ensures his lyrics take centre stage.

In fact, it is Jonathan’s lyrics that stand out the most from this album. From Child In Your Eyes, which is so vivid you can almost see the scene being played out in front of you, to Lottery Life, a the critical commentary of The City and money pressures. The song seems somewhat apt given the current financial crisis.

Alongside this, the last song Make Poverty finds Jonathan in possession of a loop pedal. This he uses to great effect, with a neatly timed backing track “make poverty history” flowing behind the verses, an assault on unfair trade.

Meanwhile, it would be impossible to write this review and leave out One Morning In May. A beautiful acoustic instrumental, it lets the sunshine in and puts a smile on your face.
